I guided an overnight trip in Cathedral Valley, in my home grounds of Capitol Reef National Park, last October. That is a sublime time of year to visit the desert, as the air is crisp, the rains have abated, the colors are riotous, and the sunrises clearly are symphonic.
Factory Butte is the one you see heaving up from the desert floor on the left side of the photo. Ground zero for a heated battle over land use, it’s a hell of an iconic Utah image. Seeing it shadowed against the early rise of the sun caught my breath for its geographic solemnity, dignity, and sheer magnificence.
Where have you seen the best sunrises ever?
