The desert’s flower display can be outrageous in its showiness. Colors explode from the dry, almost monotonously-hued landscape, drawing the eye. This specimen appeared sprouting out of the sand in late spring. I was fascinated by its intricate color shadings–note the yellow on the outer petal and the red inside–as well as the bulbous inner growths promising a succulent, tenacious life in its harsh home ground.
I’m not sure what type it is, so if anyone knows, please let me know in the comments.
